How It Works

Driver Onboarding Process

1. Apply online

During the initial application process, you’ll answer a few brief questions about yourself and your vehicle to see if you’re a good fit.

2. Learn about Wingz and NEMT

You will be asked to watch a recorded video packed with lots of information about Wingz such as how NEMT differs from regular ridershare, how payment works, and what next steps look like - amongst other FAQs. Look out for a quiz at the end!

3. Upload required documents

Wingz and our clients, depending on the market, will need your regularly updated vehicle and personal documents to become and remain an active driver on the Wingz platform.

4. Talk with the Wingz Team

Once we’ve validated your vehicle documents and confirmed your eligibility, we will arrange a time to call you for a brief interview - this is a great opportunity for you ask questions about NEMT and Wingz. We will evaluate your communication, customer service skills, and discuss whether your availability will be a good fit for the Wingz platform.

5. Complete a Background Check and other criteria

While every market is different, since we are in the transportation business one thing will always be true, we will need a Motor Vehicle Report with a stellar driving record. Once we receive your consent to run a BGC, other background checks will be run to determine your eligibility. And depending on the market and its requirements, we may also request that a Drug Screen, Physical or even an Alcohol screening is completed as well.

6. Complete your credentialing

Depending on the requirements of the client, there is required credentialing before an account is ready for activation. While this is not a comprehensive list, some examples are HIPAA, CPR/First Aid, PASS, Defensive Driving, etc. Have certificates from a previous driver job? Share them with us and we’ll see if it qualifies!

7. Schedule your Activation call and download the Wingz App

Activation calls go over features of the Wingz app to set you up for success. We will discuss Standing Orders, and answer any questions to help set you up for success before Day 1. Congratulations, you’ve earned your Wingz!

Who is eligible to become an NEMT driver?

To become a Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) driver with Wingz, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Age Requirement – Must be at least 25 years old.
  • Valid Driver’s License – Must have a current and active U.S. driver’s license.
  • Driving History & Background Check – Must have at least 3 years of driving experience with a clean motor vehicle record (MVR) and pass a comprehensive background check.
  • Drug Screening – Must pass a drug test and random screenings may be conducted.
  • Vehicle Requirements – Must provide a 2010 or newer vehicle that is reliable, well-maintained, and clean, meeting local NEMT standards (varies by region).
  • Insurance & Registration – Must have valid personal auto insurance and vehicle registration. Some markets may require additional commercial insurance coverage.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification – Some states and brokers require drivers to complete CPR and First Aid training.
  • Defensive Driving & Passenger Assistance Training – May be required based on state and broker regulations to ensure safe driving and proper passenger care.
  • Smartphone & App Proficiency – Must be comfortable using the Wingz driver app for trip management, navigation, and real-time updates.
  • Professionalism & Reliability – NEMT drivers transport individuals to critical medical appointments, so a strong commitment to punctuality, customer service, and reliability is essential.

Requirements may vary based on state regulations and broker policies. If you're interested in becoming an NEMT driver, apply through Wingz, and our team will guide you through the onboarding process.

What essential training is required for NEMT drivers?

NEMT drivers must complete specific training to ensure safe, reliable, and professional transportation for passengers with medical needs. The required training varies by state and broker but typically includes:

  • CPR & First Aid Certification – Many states and brokers require drivers to complete CPR and First Aid training to handle emergency situations.
  • Defensive Driving Course – Covers safe driving practices, risk awareness, and accident prevention techniques tailored for passenger transport.
  • Passenger Assistance & Sensitivity Training (PASS) – Focuses on assisting passengers with mobility challenges, using proper wheelchair securement (if required), and understanding passenger needs with professionalism and care.
  • HIPAA Compliance Training – Ensures drivers understand the importance of protecting patient privacy and handling sensitive health information appropriately.
  • Fraud, Waste, & Abuse (FWA) Training – Required by some brokers to educate drivers on ethical standards and prevent fraudulent activity in the NEMT industry.
  • Hands-on Vehicle & Equipment Training (if applicable) – Drivers transporting wheelchair passengers require hands-on training on securing mobility devices safely.

These trainings help ensure compliance, passenger safety, and high-quality service. Wingz provides guidance on completing required courses during the onboarding process.

Can I proceed with the application if my driver's license is from a different state?

It depends on the state and broker requirements. In most cases, you must have a valid driver’s license from the state where you plan to provide NEMT services.

However, some states may allow drivers with an out-of-state license if they meet additional requirements, such as:

  • Providing proof of residency in the state where you’ll be driving.
  • Updating your license within a certain timeframe after approval.
  • Meeting specific insurance or registration requirements based on the state's regulations.

If you have an out-of-state license and are interested in applying, we recommend checking with Wingz or the local NEMT broker to confirm eligibility in your area.

Are there additional background checks or drug tests specific to NEMT driving?

Yes, NEMT drivers are subject to stricter background checks and screening requirements compared to standard rideshare drivers. These additional checks help ensure passenger safety and compliance with state and broker regulations.

The screening process typically includes:

  • Criminal Background Check – A comprehensive review of state, federal, and local records to screen for any disqualifying offenses. Some brokers require fingerprint-based background checks.
  • Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Check – Ensures a clean driving history with no major violations (e.g., DUIs, reckless driving, excessive speeding).
  • Drug & Alcohol Testing – Some states and brokers require drug testing and random or periodic drug screenings to ensure drivers are substance-free.
  • Sex Offender Registry Check – Confirms that applicants are not listed on any sex offender registries.
  • Exclusion List Screening – Certain brokers require checking applicants against government exclusion lists (e.g., OIG or SAM databases) to ensure compliance with Medicaid and healthcare-related transportation standards.

Background check and drug test requirements vary by state and broker. Wingz will guide applicants through any necessary screenings during the onboarding process.

What types of vehicles qualify for NEMT driving?

The vehicle requirements for NEMT driving vary based on state regulations, broker policies, and the type of trips being provided. In general, eligible vehicles must meet the following criteria:

  • Model Year 2010 or Newer – Vehicles must be 2010 or newer to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with broker requirements.
  • Well-Maintained & Reliable – The vehicle must be in good working condition with no major cosmetic or mechanical issues.
  • Registered & Insured – Must have valid registration and meet insurance requirements, which may include personal or commercial coverage depending on the state.
  • Clean & Professional Appearance – The interior and exterior should be clean and free of damage to provide a comfortable experience for passengers.
  • Four-Door Sedans, SUVs, or Minivans – Most NEMT trips require standard passenger vehicles that can accommodate ambulatory riders.
  • Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) (If Applicable) – If providing wheelchair transport, the vehicle must be equipped with a securement system, lift, or ramp that meets ADA standards.
  • No Taxis, Limos, or Marked Rideshare Vehicles – Some brokers prohibit vehicles with external branding/signage, including taxi lights or commercial signage.

Requirements may vary by broker and trip type. If you're unsure whether your vehicle qualifies, Wingz can provide guidance based on your market.

Do NEMT drivers need to provide their own vehicle, or is one supplied by the company?

NEMT drivers with Wingz are independent contractors and must provide their own vehicle that meets the company’s and broker’s requirements. Wingz does not supply vehicles to drivers.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicle:

  • Meets the 2010 or newer model year requirement
  • Is well-maintained, reliable, and clean
  • Has valid registration and insurance (some markets may require commercial coverage)
  • Meets any additional requirements for wheelchair-accessible vehicles (if applicable)

If you’re unsure whether your vehicle qualifies, Wingz can provide guidance based on your market’s specific requirements.

How is compensation structured for NEMT drivers?

NEMT drivers with Wingz are independent contractors and earn based on completed trips. Compensation varies depending on factors such as trip distance, trip type, and broker rates in each market. Here’s a general breakdown:

  • Per-Trip Earnings – Drivers are paid per completed trip, with rates determined by the broker and trip details. Longer-distance trips typically pay more.
  • Standing Orders (Recurring Trips) – Some drivers receive regular scheduled trips, which provide more predictable earnings.
  • Bonuses & Incentives – In some cases, drivers may be eligible for performance-based incentives or bonuses for completing high-priority trips or maintaining high reliability.
  • Direct Deposit Payments – Earnings are deposited directly to the driver’s account on a set schedule (varies by market).

Since rates and opportunities vary by location, Wingz provides details on expected earnings and trip availability during onboarding.

What are the responsibilities of an NEMT driver, and how does it differ from traditional rideshare driving?

NEMT driving is more than just picking up and dropping off passengers—drivers are responsible for ensuring a safe, reliable, and professional experience for individuals with medical needs. Here’s how it differs from traditional rideshare driving:

Key Responsibilities of an NEMT Driver:
  • Punctuality & Reliability – Many passengers rely on NEMT for critical medical appointments (dialysis, physical therapy, etc.), so on-time performance is essential.
  • Passenger Assistance – Depending on the passenger’s needs, drivers may need to assist with getting in and out of the vehicle or handling mobility devices (if trained and certified).
  • Adhering to HIPAA & Privacy Standards – Unlike traditional rideshare, NEMT drivers must respect patient confidentiality and avoid discussing health-related information.
  • Trip Documentation & Compliance – Some trips require additional documentation, such as verifying pickups/drop-offs or following broker-specific protocols.
  • Handling Pre-Scheduled & Recurring Trips – Many NEMT rides are Standing Orders, meaning they occur on a recurring schedule rather than on-demand.
How NEMT Driving Differs from Traditional Rideshare:
  • Medical-Focused Trips – Instead of casual rides, NEMT drivers transport passengers to essential healthcare appointments.
  • Stricter Requirements – Background checks, driver training (CPR, defensive driving, passenger assistance), and compliance regulations are more stringent than traditional rideshare.
  • Trip Scheduling & Assignment – Unlike on-demand rideshare, NEMT trips are often pre-scheduled through brokers and require careful trip planning.
  • Higher Reliability Expectations – No-shows or late arrivals can negatively impact patients and may lead to removal from the platform.

NEMT driving is a more structured and service-focused role compared to traditional rideshare, but it also offers predictable trip volume, the potential for recurring trips, and the ability to make a meaningful impact in passengers’ lives.

What are the typical working hours for an NEMT driver?

NEMT drivers with Wingz have flexible schedules since they are independent contractors, but trip availability is largely based on broker demand and medical appointment schedules.

General Working Hours:
  • Most NEMT trips occur between 5 AM – 6 PM, Monday through Friday since they are tied to medical appointments (dialysis, physical therapy, check-ups, etc.).
  • Limited weekend and evening trips are available, but volume depends on the broker and market demand.
  • Standing Orders (Recurring Trips) can provide more consistency in a driver’s schedule, as some members need regular transportation to ongoing treatments.

Since NEMT is not an on-demand service like traditional rideshare, drivers typically plan their shifts based on scheduled trip availability rather than logging on and waiting for random ride requests.

Are there specific insurance requirements for NEMT drivers?

Yes, NEMT drivers must have proper insurance coverage, but it is similar to Uber and Lyft’s rideshare insurance model. Wingz provides commercial insurance coverage while drivers are on active trips, but drivers still need to maintain their own personal auto insurance.

How Insurance Works for Wingz NEMT Drivers (Similar to Uber/Lyft):
  • Personal Auto Insurance – Drivers must carry their own personal auto insurance policy that meets their state’s minimum requirements.
  • Wingz Commercial Insurance Coverage – Once a driver accepts a trip and is transporting a passenger, Wingz provides additional coverage, similar to how Uber and Lyft handle insurance.
  • Off-Trip Periods – When not actively on a trip, a driver’s personal auto insurance applies.

Unlike traditional NEMT providers that may require drivers to carry their own commercial insurance, Wingz operates more like Uber and Lyft, where the platform provides coverage during active trips. Drivers do not need to purchase separate commercial insurance unless required by local regulations.

For specific details about coverage limits, Wingz can provide additional guidance based on market and broker requirements.

Does Wingz provide insurance to drivers when driving for Wingz?

Yes, Wingz provides insurance coverage to drivers while they are on an active trip, similar to how Uber and Lyft handle insurance.

How Insurance Works for Wingz Drivers:
  • Personal Auto Insurance Required – Drivers must maintain their own personal auto insurance that meets state requirements.
  • Wingz Insurance Coverage – Once a driver accepts a trip and is transporting a passenger, Wingz provides commercial insurance coverage, similar to Uber/Lyft.
  • Off-Trip Periods – When a driver is not actively on a trip, their personal auto insurance applies.

Wingz ensures that drivers are covered while providing NEMT services, so they do not need to purchase additional commercial insurance unless required by specific state or broker regulations. If you have questions about coverage limits or specifics, Wingz can provide more details based on your market.

How are NEMT trips scheduled and dispatched?

All NEMT trips with Wingz are scheduled in advance and available for drivers to choose directly in the Wingz Driver App. Drivers have full visibility into trip details, including pickup/drop-off locations, timing, and pay before accepting a ride.

How It Works:
  1. Trips Appear in the Wingz Driver App – Drivers can log into the app and see available trips, including all key details upfront, such as pickup time, destination, and pay for the ride.
  2. Roundtrip Included – Every trip is roundtrip, meaning drivers will always take the passenger to their appointment and bring them back, reducing dead miles.
  3. Drivers Choose Their Own Trips – Wingz does not assign trips or create schedules for drivers. Instead, drivers pick the trips that work best for them based on their availability.
  4. Standing Orders (Recurring Trips) – Some passengers require ongoing transportation for treatments like dialysis or physical therapy. Drivers who accept these trips get the benefit of a regular schedule with predictable earnings.
  5. Day-of Trip Monitoring – Once a driver accepts a trip, they are expected to arrive on time, complete both legs of the trip, and ensure a smooth ride experience. The Wingz team actively monitors trips for reliability.

Since all trips are scheduled in advance, drivers can plan their workdays ahead of time, ensuring a more stable and predictable workflow compared to on-demand rideshare.
